Changing a slicer format
Who is this article for?
Users responsible for building and maintaining portal pages / visualisations that require slicers to be included
Available slicer types are determined by the data type for that field
- Open a page where you use slicers in Designer
- Hover over the slicer until the black settings icon appears ( ▼ icon)
- Select Slicer
- Save the visualisation
Type of Slicer
Whilst there is no right or wrong setting, the structure should be set with below in mind.
Date Range
This allows the slicer to be presented a style that the user can enter a start and end date to return results from that time-period. This slicer is only available for fields where the data is type is "Date" An example of this format is shown below
Buttons
This allows the slicer to be presented a style that the user see a 'list version' of all the options available end select specific options. Note how the buttons are set to differing lengths dependant on the specific label.
Slider
This allows the slicer to be presented a style that represents a slider that the user can use to set a specific range of returns. Moving the sliders start / end points to decrease/increase the returns (i.e. IDs 2 - 9)
Select List
Like buttons, this allows the slicer to be presented a style that the user see a 'list version' of all the options available Note how the buttons are all equal lengths (unlike the buttons)
Dropdown
The most common type of slicer. The dropdown takes up less space and can be configured to allow the user to select one option OR multiple options.
Hierarchy
A hierarchy allows the user to determine results based on a 'like' or 'is not like' argument. User can also specify selected items and/or return records with blank values
Text
A useful slicer type to allow the textual entry of a search term. This can be used for searching specific terms / words (e.g. within a description) Use the wildcard (*) to broaden the search based on the text
Exact Value
Like text, this allows the slicer to be presented textual format but will only return results that match the EXACT variable of all the options available. Note wildcards are not supported with exact value - unless the asterisk is included in the search term (e.g. *Falls)
First x Unique Values
Can be used to search for variable that are the top x values (i.e. 10)
Last x Unique Values
Can be used to search for variable that are the bottom x values (i.e. 10)
