Creating a Performance Metric
Who is this article for?
Users responsible for creating a managing performance metrics within Ideagen Healthcare Guardian.
Performance Modeller or Model Administrator permissions
This article shows you how to create a performance metric and associated it to an object in Ideagen Healthcare Guardian. Please note that you will need to repeat these steps for every measure needed.
For example: if you are creating a percentage performance metric, you may also need to create a 'Numerator' 'Denominator' and the the % measure itself.
1. Locating the object
Each measure in the system can be individually configured to ensure that you can report the correct information over time. There are really three key elements to think about:
- How the measure will appear in your reports
- How the measure will use the data to report performance
- How the measure will calculate the data within the frameworks you create and through time
To get started:
- Use the Global Search to return the name of the object in which you want to create your performance measure
- Once you have identified the object you wish to use to create and associate the first instance of that measure, Right-click to Open Notebook, then click Measure and then Edit,
- Click New.
-
The create new dialog Windows will display
Please note that throughout, those fields denoted by a red asterisk are mandatory fields and a measure cannot be created these fields being populated (e.g. "Name" Please see above)
2. Your key result
To populate the section:
- Add a measure name. This must be a unique name. Ideagen Healthcare Guardian will not allow the creation of measures with the same name. Please not that Name is limited to 100 characters including specials and spaces.
-
(Optional) Add a measure description. Please note that Description is limited to 1000 characters including special and spaces.
- Click More Details.
3. More details
To populate the section:
- This is a section entirely made up of any custom measure fields that have been added by a Model Administrator for use on all measures
- Populate each question as required, based upon the how these fields are configured. These include (but are not limited to) Employee Pickers, Dropdown Boxes, Multi-Select option, Integer or Free Text options.
- If you are unsure on how to populate any of these, please contact your organisation's Ideagen Healthcare Guardian Oversight Administrator/Administration Team and reach out to them for assistance.
4. Define success
To populate the section:
- Set the periodicity for the collection frequency of the measure (e.g. once a week, once a month, daily etc.)
- Define the measurement unit for the measure (e.g. Number, Percentage, £'s, RAG etc.)
- Choose whether you want to allow Ideagen Healthcare Guardian to automatically populate a '0' value for missing reporting periods. This has both its benefits and drawbacks - are you going to be saying you had '0' Falls in the Ward (for example) or are you going to 'expose' where data hasn't been reported as expected.
- Choose whether you want to make this a Universal Measure.
- Determine the performance scheme you want to use for the measure. How should this measure be reported? (e.g. Red, Amber, Green, Red Blue Green, Red Blue Yellow, Green, Red, Amber, Blue, Green etc.)
- Choose the polarity that should be used for this measure. Are you aiming to exceed any set target (bigger is better) or achieve below the target (smaller is better). Alternatively, you could select 'Plan is Best' meaning that the measure's performance has two boundaries for Red, Amber, Green (for example)
- Define how Ideagen Healthcare Guardian should determine this performance (e.g. % Variance, Absolute Variance or Absolute Value).
- Set the series which should be used to determine the measure's performance assessment (e.g. Actual vs. Target (default), or performance against a series (i.e. Actual vs. Forecast)
- Confirm the thresholds which will be used to determine the performance scheme (e.g. -10% [away from target] is Red and -0.01 [away from target] - sometimes called 'on the nose' (i.e. when it meets or out- performs the measure's expected target and another in between the two values is Amber).
5. Derived measure
To populate the section:
- if necessary, set the calculation formula for the population of data into the measure.
6. Progress settings
To populate the section:
- Set the reporting period for the measure. This is defaulted to the Financial Year (01 April - 31 March), but you may choose a different reporting start date if required by clicking 'Custom' and setting a different 'Year Start' (e.g. 1 May)
- Set the accumulation method for the measure. This enabled Ideagen Healthcare Guardian to provide a Year To Date (YTD) value based on the setting and reporting year (e.g. Financial Year (01 April - 31 March)). The table below shows the how the YTD values are calculated based on the method chosen
-
Set the aggregation method for the measure. This enables Ideagen Healthcare Guardian to aggregate values based on the setting for any given reporting period The table below shows the how the YTD values are calculated based on the method chosen
- If necessary, also amend the weighting of the measure. This largely remains as the default of '1'.
7. Display format
To populate the section:
- Set the display format and the required number of decimal places required for each for display options
- Value format
- Performance variance format
- Absolute variance format
8. Duration
To populate the section:
- If necessary, set the duration of the measure lifecycle. This will impact how much historic and future data can be captured in the Object Measure instance. The default is 'As Objective' meaning that the measure will inherent the Start and End Dates of the object the measure is associated to, but you may change if you require something different.
- Click Save.
